CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team stayed unbeaten on its home court as they swept the Texas – Pan American Broncs by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-17) final in the first match of the day at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic. The team will close out the tourney with a 7 p.m. match against North Texas at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders improved to 5-4 on the year while UTPA fell to 1-9 this season. Shannon Hullum and Brianna Brink tied for the match-high with nine kills apiece while Tina Chavis added six and Jordan Flemmer notched five. Logen Bourque had a match-high 31 assists to go along with 10 digs for a double-double and Micah Nolan added a team-high 15 digs.
Brink set the tone in the first frame after starting it off with a service ace to give her team a 1-0 lead. Following a kill from UTPA to tie it at 1-1, the Islanders reeled off five-straight points behind a pair of kills from Hullum to make it a 6-1 score. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi traded points at a 2-to-1 rate over the next six points to extend the advantage to 10-3 behind a service ace and kill from Hullum. The biggest lead was nine points following a Chavis kill to make it 20-11 late in the set. UTPA rallied to within 24-22 late in the set before another Hullum kill ended the scoring at 25-22 to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Set two started the way the first ended as Hullum notched the opening kill for a 1-0 lead. Two points by the Broncs gave them their first lead of the match at 2-1, but it was short-lived as three consecutive errors gave Texas A&M – Corpus Christi a 4-2 lead. The two teams traded the lead several times before the Islanders used a pair of kills from Brink and Bourque to take a 13-10 lead as part of an 8-2 run that gave their team a lead it would not relinquish. A block from Ashley Phelps and Chavis put the score at 23-18 before back-to-back kills from Phelps ended the set at 25-19 to give her team a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, the score was tied at 3-3 before a 6-0 run by the Islanders behind kills from Chavis and Bourque along with a service ace from Hullum made it 9-3 lead. The largest lead of the set came at 24-14 after five-straight points on a Nolan service ace, a block by Flemmer and Brink, a Bourque kill and a Flemmer kill to bring it to match point. With the score 24-17, Brink hammered home the final kill of the match for a 25-17 and a sweep for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
