The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team will be in action at home for the first time this season when it hosts the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic starting Friday afternoon. The team will host North Texas (4-4), Texas – Pan American (1-7) and Towson (9-1) in the two-day event.
The Islanders are 3-4 heading into the weekend and are looking to get back on the winning track while playing at the Dugan Wellness Center for the first time this year. The team will be led into the tournament by Jessica Korda with 53 kills on the season, followed closely by Brooke Alverson and her 51 kills. Brianna Brink has come on strong, ranking third on the team in both kills (40) and digs (56) as a true freshman, while Micah Nolan is tops with 135 digs this year.
First up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be Towson and their 9-1 record on the year after winning their last eight matches. Katy Buck is the top hitter on the team with 135 kills to go along with 72 digs. Aubrey Kirven has tallied 307 assists while Paige Sekerak and her 137 digs as each lead the team in their respective categories.
On Saturday the Islanders take on UTPA for the second time this year. In the season-opening tournament, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi won a 3-1 match against the Broncs. Ijane Holman is the leading hitter with 50 kills on the season while Shauna Miller has 169 assists to pace the Broncs. Juri Franzen leads the team with 109 digs on the year.
The final match of the tournament will feature the Islanders and North Texas at 7 p.m. on Saturday night. The Mean Green are led by Eboni Godfrey at 87 kills, Kayla Saez and her 216 assists while Sarah Wiley is tops in digs with 107 this season.
