Islanders Lose Pair to Close out Valparaiso Tournament

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team lost a pair of tough matches in the final day of the Marriott Volley Brawl hosted by Valparaiso. The Islanders lost a 3-1 (25-14, 26-28, 25-12, 25-20) final to Valparaiso in the early match, while dropping a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) final against Ball State to complete play in the tournament. Senior Jessica Korda was named to the all-tournament team after posting 31 kills, 24 digs and seven total blocks in the four-match weekend.

The team is now 3-4 on the season while Ball State is 7-0 and Valparaiso moved to 6-2 on the year. Next up for the Islanders will be the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic next weekend at the Dugan Wellness Center.

In the early match of the day, the Islanders lost a 3-1 final to host Valparaiso that saw the team rally back from an early 1-0 deficit to tie it at 1-1 before Valpo closed out the final two sets for the victory.

Down 1-0, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was able to grind out a set win in the second, getting four kills apiece from Korda and Tina Chavis, while Micah Nolan posted 12 digs to lead a 28-26, come-from-behind victory. The Islanders trailed 21-17 late in the match, but scored 11-of-16 points to post a win on Logen Bourque's kill to end the set.

The Islanders offense was unable to get into a rhythm the rest of the match, losing 25-12 and 25-20 in the final two sets.

In the final game of the tourney, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi faced off against an unbeaten Ball State team. The Cardinals took an early lead and were up 23-20 when back-to-back kills from Brianna Brink and Brooke Alverson closed the gap to 23-22, but Ball State scored 2-of-3 to take a 25-23 win in the first set.

The second set was another close one, with the Islanders closing to within 23-21 before Ball State scored the final two of the set. The third set was close early on at 11-10 in favor of the Cardinals, but they were able to stretch the lead to 22-15 before finishing with a 15-17 win.
