Islanders Come Up Short in Final Match of Bearkat Volleyball Invitational
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team came up short in their bid for an undefeated weekend with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22) against host Sam Houston State in the Bearkat Volleyball Invitational.
The Islanders complete the tournament with a 2-1 record while SHSU improves to 3-0 on the season. Jessica Korda and Brooke Alverson led the way for their team with 10 kills apiece while Ashley Phelps added eight and Brianna Brink posted six kills each.
In the first set, the two teams played a close contest, with Sam Houston holding the lead throughout as the Islanders were unable to level the score. The advantage was whittled down to a single point at 20-19, but the Bearkats scored five-of-seven points to take a 25-21 set for a 1-0 lead.
In set two, the Islanders fell behind early and could never recover as they lost a 25-15 final to fall into a 2-0 deficit.
The third set saw the Islanders jump out to a 10-3 lead behind kills three kills from Brink and a pair by Phelps for the seven-point advantage. The Bearkats were able to come back and tie the score at 22-22, but another kill by Phelps sealed the set for the Islanders at 25-23.
The final set was another battle, with a total of 18 ties and seven lead changes. The Islanders took their final lead of the set on at 21-20, but SHSU quickly responded with three consecutive points for a 23-21 lead before taking a 25-22 final.
