CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-23, 10-25, 14-25, 20-25) setback against Sam Houston State on Senior Day. Emma Ridley and Jessica Jennett were honored before the match for their careers.
The Islanders are now 12-16 overall and 5-9 in Southland Conference matches. The Bearkats improved to 13-16 overall, 7-7 in league play. A&M - Corpus Christi remains in a tie for the eighth spot in the conference standings due to a Nicholls loss to UT Arlington. The top eight teams in the standings qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament.
Playing in the final home match of her career, Ridley led her team with 16 kills in the match to go along with 13 digs for a double-double, her 15th of the year. Micah Nolan had a match-high 37 digs to set a new career-high and tie the school record for digs in a match. Logen Bourque led her team with 31 assists in the match.
In the first set, A&M - Corpus Christi struggled early on, trailing by as many seven points at 18-11. The Islanders then went on a tear, scoring eight-of-nine points to pull even at 19-19, capped off by a block assist from Brooke Alverson and Isabella Arcidiacono. They took their first lead of the set at 21-20 on a Ridley kill. After falling behind 23-22, A&M - Corpus Christi called a timeout to regroup. After the break, an Arcidiacono kill and a block assist from Jordan Flemmer and Bourque followed by a kill from Ridley ended the set at 25-23 in favor of the home team to give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead.
After a tough opening set, Sam Houston came out on fire is the second, taking a 5-0 lead and leading by as many as 12 at 17-5. The Islanders were never able to mount a rally, falling by a 25-10 final to even the match heading into the intermission.
In set three, A&M - Corpus Christi grabbed an early 3-1 lead on kills from Ridley and Bourque before the Bearkats came back to tie it at 4-4. After a quick point to make it 5-4 for the Islanders, Sam Houston reeled off seven-straight points to take an 11-5 advantage. A&M-Corpus Christi was unable to recover, falling behind by as many as 10 points and eventually losing a 25-14 final to go down 2-1 in the match.
The final set saw five tie scores as the Islanders tried to fend off the Bearkats. The score was tied as late as 9-9 before four-straight points gave Sam Houston a 13-9 lead. The score was 19-13 in favor of the visiting team when A&M-Corpus Christi began a late rally. They scored 7-of-11 points to get within 23-20 before the Bearkats finished the match off with two consecutive points.
Arcidiacono was the second-leading hitter on the Islanders team with 13 kills in the match. Jennett had 12 digs in the match as the third-leading defensive player for the team. Ridley also had the only block solo of the day while she and Alverson tied for total blocks with four apiece.
Next up for the Islanders will be a road match this Thursday, Nov. 11 at UT Arlington before ending the season on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Texas State.
