Islanders volleyball late rally falls short against Northwestern State
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon when they suffered a 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 13-25, 15-25, 15-7) loss to the Northwestern State Demons at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The loss brings the Islanders record to 11-15 overall while they are now 4-8 in Southland Conference matches. Northwestern is now 12-15 on the year and 3-9 in league matches.
Emma Ridley led A&M - Corpus Christi with a match-high 15 kills while adding 13 digs. The team had four players in double-digit digs as Micah Nolan led with 27, Jessica Jennett picked up 17 and Logen Bourque added 16.
in the opening set, the Islanders took an early 4-1 lead before the Demons scored three-straight to knot the score at 4-4. A&M - Corpus Christi regained the lead and extended the advantage to as many as six points at 13-7. With the score at 15-10, Northwestern outscored their opponent 9-2 to take a 19-17 lead. With the score tied at 23-23, the Demons scored the final two points to take a 25-23 win and the early advantage in the match.
Set two saw the Islanders fall behind early and never recover as they fell by a 25-17 final. Trailing 3-2, a kill from Shannon Hullum tied the score at 3-3. The Demons took control from that point on and gained a 20-10 advantage late in the set. A&M - Corpus Christi mounted a late run but was unable to complete the comeback, losing 25-17 to go into the intermission down 2-0 in the match.
After the break, the Islanders came out looking like a different team, scoring the first six points of the third set and taking an early 9-1 lead on an Isabella Arcidiacono kill. Northwestern scored the next four points to get within 9-5, but they were unable to get any close. The Islanders onslaught continued as they outscored the Demons 7-1 to gain a 10-point advantage at 16-6 on a pair of kills from Ridley and one apiece from Bourque and Arcidiacono. They led by as many as 13 points before finishing the set with a 25-13 win.
Set four was more of the same as the Islanders took a 4-1 lead. The Demons tied it up at 5-5 before A&M - Corpus Christi scored four-straight on a pair of kills from Ridley and one from Arcidiacono to make it 9-5. Leading 17-10, they pushed the advantage to 10 points at 20-10 on a kill from Jordan Flemmer and both a kill and a service ace from Brooke Alverson. Northwestern mounted a short rally, to get within 20-14, but the Islanders closed it out with three-straight points on an Arcidiacono kill, a Jennett service ace and a Ridley kill to win 25-15.
The fifth set saw a dramatic turnaround from the previous two as the Demons took the early momentum, jumping out 8-1 in a race to 15. A&M - Corpus Christi scored three points to make it 9-4 and got as close as 9-7 on an Alverson kill, but were never able to fully get back into the set. With Northwestern up 9-7, the visiting team scored the final six points to take a 15-7 final.
Arcidiacono and Shannon Hullum were second on the team in kills with nine apiece. Bourque had a match-high 39 assists while Alverson led the team with a pair of service aces. Bourque and Arcidiacono each had one block solo while Alverson had a block solo and three block assists to lead the team.
Next up will be another home match, this time against Southland rival Stephen F. Austin. The last time the two teams played, the Islanders won a 3-1 match against the Ladyjacks for the programs first-ever win against SFA. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4 at the Dugan Wellness Center.
