Islanders fall to McNeese State in Southland road match

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) match against McNeese State on the road.

The Islanders are now 11-13 overall and 4-6 in Southland Conference matches. The Cowgirls improve to 10-15 overall and 4-6 in league play.

Emma Ridley and Isabella Arcidiacono each had 10 kills in the match to lead the offensive effort. Ridley also added 12 digs to tie Micah Nolan for the team lead in the category.

In the opening set, the Islanders fell behind 2-0 but scored three-straight points on kills from Ridley and Brooke Alverson. An Arcidiacono kill pushed the lead to 11-6 before five consecutive points evened the score at 11-11. The match was tied at 14-14 until the Cowgirls reeled off four points in-a-row to take an 18-14 advantage. A&M - Corpus Christi closed to within 19-18 but would score just one more point as McNeese won a 25-19 set to take a 1-0 lead.

Set two saw the Cowgirls take an early advantage at 5-4 when a kill from Ridley, back-to-back kills from Arcidiacono and a Ridley service ace gave the Islanders an 8-5 lead. The two teams traded the lead with A&M - Corpus Christi taking a 17-16 advantage. Seven-straight points from McNeese put them up 24-17 and on the brink on clinching the set. After a kill from Logen Bourque and a block assist from Bourque and Jordan Flemmer closed the score to 24-19, the Cowgirls got a kill from Nicole Bowden to make it a 25-19 final and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The final set was another back-and-forth affair with the score being tied eight times and the lead changing hands twice. A&M - Corpus Christi fell behind 4-1 and trailed for the majority of the set before evening the score at 15-15. The Cowgirls quickly retook the lead before the Islanders took a brief 19-18 lead. McNeese State trailed 22-21 before scoring four consecutive points to end the set and clinch a 3-0 match win.

Bourque led the team with 28 assists and Alverson had a team-best two block solos while Flemmer added one in the match.

Next up for A&M - Corpus Christi will be a home contest against Central Arkansas on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center. It will be a big night for Islanders athletics as the department will be hosting a camp out for students wanting to get the best seats for the upcoming men's basketball game against Texas A&M on Nov. 15.
