SAN ANTONIO - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team fought hard, but came up short against one of the top teams in the Southland Conference, losing a 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-21) match to UTSA on the road on Thursday night.
The Islanders are now 11-12 on the season and 4-5 in league play. The Roadrunners improved to 14-9 on the year and 8-1 in Southland matches.
Emma Ridley led the team with a match-high 13 kills on the night while Logen Bourque added 30 assists in the contest. Micah Nolan had 12 digs and Jessica Jennett added 11 as both players reached double-digits on the night.
In the first set, the Islanders and Roadrunners were tied at 8-8 before four-straight points by UTSA gave them a 12-8 advantage. A&M - Corpus Christi was never able to get any closer than three points the rest of the set before eventually taking a 25-18 defeat.
In the second set, the Islanders fell behind early and trailed by as many as five points on several occasions, including at 14-9. They made a 5-0 run to knot the match at 14-14 on a pair of kills from Ridley and three-straight UTSA attack errors. The two teams were tied as late as 20-20 before A&M - Corpus Christi got a service ace from Jennett and a kill from Jessica Korda to take a 22-20 lead. UTSA trailed 24-22 but scored three-straight points to get to match-point at 25-24. A Ridley kill tied it up, but the Roadrunners finished the set off with two kills to take a 27-25 lead.
UTSA took another early lead in the final set, going up 4-0 before a kill from Bourque got her team on the board. The Islanders were able to get within two points on several occasions, including at 11-9 and 21-19 before closing the gap to just one at 21-20. With the score at 23-21, the Roadrunners scored the final two points of the match to take a 25-21 set victory and a 3-0 match win.
Next up for the Islanders will be another road match. On Saturday, they travel to Lake Charles, La. to take on the McNeese State Cowgirls at 2:00 p.m.
