Volleyball downs Texas ' Pan American to even 2010 record

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 26-24) win over the Texas - Pan American Broncs at the Dugan Wellness Center to finish its non-conference schedule for the season.

The win also brings the Islanders record back to .500 on the season at 11-11. The Broncs are now 6-16 on the year.

"It's a big win for us to get our record back to .500 on the year," said head coach Tony Graystone. "I was glad to see them take care of business with the score tied 1-1.

Emma Ridley had another big night for A&M - Corpus Christi, totaling 19 kills in the match. Three other players, Shannon Hullum, Brooke Alverson and Jordan Flemmer, just missed double-digits with nine kills on the night.

The Islanders came out on fire in the opening set, taking an 8-0 lead before UTPA called a timeout. The Broncs moved to within four points at 17-13 before A&M - Corpus Christi pushed the set out of reach with a 5-0 run on a pair of kills each from Ridley and Logen Bourque to make it 22-13. A Ridley kill finished off the period at 25-14 and gave her team an early 1-0 lead.

In set two, the Broncs feel behind 3-0 once again, but were able to overcome the early deficit and get back into it. Trailing 9-8, UTPA scored three-straight points to take a 12-8 lead. The Islanders squared the set at 19-19 before another 3-0 run by the Broncs made it 22-19. They would go on to take a 25-22 victory and even the match at 1-1.

Set three saw A&M - Corpus Christi take an early lead before UTPA tied the score at 9-9. Three-straight points on kills by Hullum and Isabella Arcidiacono gave the Islanders a 12-9 advantage. The Broncs got to within 13-12 before five consecutive points on a pair of kills by Ridley, a kill from Bourque and a Micah Nolan service ace pushed it to 18-12. With the score at 24-17, Jordan Flemmer ended the set with a kill to put the match at 2-1.

Set four had seven tied scores with two lead changes. A&M - Corpus Christi trailed early before knotting the score at 16-16. UTPA regained the lead and the Islanders kept fighting back until the score was 24-23 in favor of the Broncs. Three-straight points ended the match, with the final one coming on a block assist by Arcidiacono and Alverson.

Nolan led the team with 26 digs while Ridley added 16. Hullum and Jessica Jennett each added 11 to reach double-digit digs. Bourque just missed the first 50-assist match of her career as she ended the night with 49. Flemmer added two more block solos while Hullum, Alverson, Jessica Korda and Arcidiacono added one apiece.

Next up for A&M - Corpus Christi is a Southland Conference match on Thursday in San Antonio against UTSA. The Islanders will be looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Roadrunners and get above .500 in league play.

"Thursday is a big match for us," said Graystone. "We have to get refocused quickly going back into conference play."
