Tuesday night will mark the final non-conference match of the season for the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team. The Islanders will be playing the Texas - Pan American Broncs starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
A&M - Corpus Christi comes into the match with a 10-11 record on the year after a pair of wins this past weekend against the Nicholls Colonels and the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in Southland Conference play. The Broncs are 6-15 on the season after going 1-1 last week. When the two teams met earlier this season, the Islanders took a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-18) victory on Sept. 7 in Edinburg.
"We're going to approach Pan Am the same way we did before," said head coach Tony Graystone. "We went down there expecting a tough match, we just played really well that night.
"It wasn't anything they did wrong, we just played well and we just want to continue that."
Reigning Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week Emma Ridley will lead the team into its match against the Broncs. She collected 25 kills and 20 digs against the Colonels. It was the second 20-20 match of the season for her. Against the Lions, she had a match-high 17 kills to go along with three service aces. She had a .387 hitting percentage against SELA and totaled a .279 percentage on the weekend.
Logen Bourque leads the team in assists with 682 on the year, the ninth-best total in school history. Micah Nolan has a team-best 325 digs for the Islanders, good enough for the sixth-best single-season total for an Islanders player.
For UTPA, they will be led by Marci Logan with 221 kills during the year. Ijanae Holman has 126 while Meghan Fichtel has totaled 114 this season. Rita Gonzalez leads the team with 521 assists and Kaitlin Vasquez is tops in digs with 228.
Although A&M-Corpus Christi swept the Broncs earlier in the season, Graystone is not taking anything for granted and is preparing his team just as he would for a conference match.
"We are going to play our best lineup and go after the win with everything we have," said Graystone. "We expect them to do the same thing."
