Islanders drop final match of Islanders Classic to Villanova

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team lost the final match of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic against the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday night by a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-12) final. Isabella Arcidiacono was named to the all-tournament team for her play throughout the weekend.

The Islanders are now 5-7 on the season while the Wildcats improved their record to 8-3. Emma Ridley led the team in kills with nine on the night while Shannon Hullum was second on the team with seven.

In set one, the two teams fought back-and-forth as the Islanders trailed 16-12 before scoring seven-straight points to take a 19-16 lead. The team used a pair of kills from Ridley, a kill from Jordan Flemmer and a service ace by Arcidiacono to claw their way back into the lead. The Wildcats scored five times in the last seven points to take a 25-23 win in the first set. The teams combined for nine ties and five lead changes before the Wildcats came out victorious.

Set two saw the Islanders and Wildcats in a struggle once again, as the teams were tied seven times and had six lead changes. The biggest lead of the match was when Villanova led 15-11 with the Islanders unable to get closer than two points the rest of the way. The Wildcats took a 25-21 final to gain a 2-0 lead.

The Islanders scored the first five points in the third set as they fought hard to get back into the match. The team was unable to sustain the momentum as the Wildcats 8-of-10 points to take an 8-7 lead. After the Islanders scored to tie the set at 8-8, the Wildcats reeled off 9-of-10 points to take a commanding 17-9 advantage. Villanova finished off the set with 8-of-11 points to finish the match with a 25-12 win.

Logen Bourque led the team with 21 assists while adding two block assists. Flemmer led the team in block assists with three, and added four kills as the third-leading scorer. Micah Nolan's 13 digs paced the team while Hullum added seven for second-best of the match.

The Islanders are back in action on Sept. 21 at home against Prairie View A&M. The match will be played at the Dugan Wellness Center and is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
