Volleyball suffers loss to start second day of Islanders Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-20) loss to the Houston Baptist Huskies in its first match of the day at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic. The Islanders will be back in action tonight at 7:00 p.m. to close out tournament play against the Villanova Wildcats.

The team now sits at 5-6 on the season while the Huskies improved to 4-6 on the year. The Wildcats enter their 3:00 p.m. match against Sam Houston State with a record of 6-3.

Shannon Hullum led the team with seven kills in the match as the Islanders did not have a player in double-digit kills for the first time this year. Emma Ridley and Isabella Arcidiacono were close behind with six kills each.

In the first set, the two teams battled back-and-forth as the Islanders took an early lead before the Huskies rallied for a 27-25 win. With the set tied at 3-3, the Islanders scored six-of-seven points to take a 9-4 lead. Later in the set, A&M - Corpus Christi led 18-14 before HBU scored four-straight to knot the score at 18-18. The teams traded points with six ties from that point until the end of the set. Tied at 25-25, the Huskies scored the final two points to take a 1-0 lead.

In set two, the teams played even throughout the set as neither team gained more than a four-point advantage. The Huskies' largest lead was at 20-16 before scoring five of the final six points to close out the second set with a 25-18 score.

The final set saw the score tied nine times and three lead changes. With the score tied 9-9, HBU scored three-straight points to take a 12-9 lead. The Islanders got to within one point at 13-12, but were never able to get back to level with the Huskies, falling by a 25-20 final to end the match.

Logen Bourque led the team with 26 assists while Micah Nolan was tops in digs with 16 in the match. Amanda Lowe had team-highs in both block categories as she registered one block solo and three block assists.
