Volleyball dominates Texas Southern to close out first day of Islanders Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-23) win over Texas Southern to finish first-day action at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic. The Islanders will play twice on Saturday, with the Houston Baptist Huskies up first at 1:00 p.m. and then against the Villanova Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. to finish tournament play.

The team evened its record to 5-5 on the season while the Lady Tigers fall to 0-5 on the year. Houston Baptist lost to Villanova on the first day and is now 3-6 while the Wildcats hold a 6-3 record.

Jessica Korda led the way against the Lady Tigers, amassing 11 kills, including eight in the first set, as the Islanders rolled to the non-conference victory. Sheridan Paulus was right behind Korda, notching 10 kills on the night.

In set one, the Islanders jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a kill from Korda, a pair of service aces by Emma Ridley and a Texas Southern attack error. The Lady Tigers got to within 9-7 before the Islanders stretched the lead back out to as many as 11 points at 23-12 late in the set. With the score 24-14, Korda ended the set with a kill for a 25-14 win.

Set two saw the Islanders go from down 2-1 to up 6-2 after scoring five-straight points to take the lead. Primarily a setter, Logen Bourque notched two kills in the run, along with a service ace from Sarah Sanchez and a TSU attack error. With the score 9-5, Amanda Lowe recorded three kills to go along with two Lady Tigers attack errors to extend the margin to nine points at 14-5. When the set got to 20-10, the Islanders receive a pair of kills from Brooke Alverson, a kill from Paulus and a pair of service aces from Korda to close out the set.

In the third and final set, the Islanders fell behind 7-0 to start the match before coming all the way back to knot the score at 12-12. The two teams played close the rest of the way as the Islanders took a 24-20 lead before three-straight points from TSU made it 24-23. Paulus ended the drama with a kill to give her team a 3-0 match victory to end the night.

Bourque led the team with 15 assists while Sanchez made her biggest mark with seven digs to lead the team.
