CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team lost a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) match to Southland rival Sam Houston State in a non-conference match at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic in the first home match of the season.
The Islanders are now 4-5 on the season while the Bearkats improved to 5-5 on the year. Next up for the Islanders is a 7:00 p.m. match against Texas Southern to close out play on the first day the tournament.
Isabella Arcidiacono had a match-high 12 kills as she led the team in kills for the third-straight match. Emma Ridley was second on the team with eight against the Bearkats.
The first set started with the Islanders scoring first and moving to a 4-1 lead after five points. The Bearkats came back to tie it at 7-7 before taking their first lead of the set at 8-7. Trailing 9-8, the Islanders picked up a kill from Ridley to knot the score at 9-9, but the Bearkats scored the next four points to take control of the set. The Islanders closed the deficit to just one point at 15-14 but were never able to get back to level, falling 25-20 in set one.
Set two started similar to the first, with the Islanders taking a 3-1 lead and the Bearkats coming back to tie the score, this time at 4-4. The two teams traded points throughout, resulting in five tie scores in the second set. With the Islanders trailing by just one at 8-7, the Bearkats scored six-straight points to give themselves a commanding lead. The Islanders were able to get within a single point three times late in the match, but could never quite overcome the advantage. The Bearkats scored 5-of-6 points to end the set at 25-20 and a 2-0 sets lead.
In the third, the Bearkats jumped out to a 7-2 lead and controlled the score as they completed the 3-0 victory with a 25-17 set win.
Logen Bourque led the team in assists with 26 while Micah Nolan led with 12 digs in the match. Amanda Lowe added the only block solo for the Islanders along with one block assist.
