ISLANDERS RETURN TO ROAD FOR NORTHERN ARIZONA FIESTA BOWL TOURNAMENT
The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team returns to action on Friday night in the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Flagstaff, Ariz. to take on the host NAU Lumberjacks. On Saturday the Islanders will face two opponents, taking to the court at 11:00 a.m. to play Maryland Eastern Shore and returning to action at 6:30 p.m. to close out play against Rider at the Rolle Activity Center.
The Islanders are 1-3 on the season after beating UALR last weekend while dropping matches to Montana, Mississippi State and Austin Peay at the Mississippi State Maroon Classic. The team took a tough 3-2 victory in its second match on Friday night after falling to Montana earlier in the day. On Saturday, the Islanders took the first set against the host team, but were unable to take another, losing 3-1 to the Bulldogs and following it up with a 3-0 defeat against Austin Peay.
After working on individual areas at the start of the week and working on team play during the middle, head coach Tony Graystone feels like the Islanders are ready to take the next step towards being a better team at the NAU tournament.
"We worked on some specific things in practice that we had trouble with last weekend," said Graystone. "I feel like we are progressing well and should show improvement at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament."
Emma Ridley led her team in offense last weekend. She recorded at least 10 kills in each match and tallied a high of 21 with a .288 hitting percentage against UALR in the Islanders only win of the tourney. Isabella Arcidiacono was second on the team with 31 kills in the four matches with a high of 16 against UALR.
Micah Nolan led the Islanders defensively with 76 digs and was named honorable mention in the Southland Conference Player of the Week voting. She also committed just two reception errors in 93 attempts for a .978 reception percentage on the weekend.
Ridley is second in the league with 54 kills through four matches and has the second-highest hitting percentage among players with at least 50 kills.
The Islanders will try to add to their win total at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament before coming back home to host the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Classic on Sept. 10-11 at the Dugan Wellness Center.
