The 2010 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team reported on Friday for the first official day of team activities. The Islanders are meeting with the compliance officers in the afternoon and will follow that up by taking physicals in the new athletic training facility located in Island Hall.
Head coach Tony Graystone and his coaching staff welcomes the 10 newcomers to the Island along with the five returnees ahead of the start of practice on Monday morning. The Islanders will kick off activities at 8 a.m. on Monday with a run, followed by the first practice of the year shortly after 10 a.m.
"This is kind of the big weekend, all the parents are in town dropping the players off and saying goodbye while we do all the last minute preparation," said Graystone. "It's a good time of year and we're just trying to get through the weekend so we can get on the court Monday."
Following the first day on Monday, the team will practice starting at 9 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. during the next two weeks as it prepares for the season opener on Aug. 27, against Montana in the Mississippi State Maroon Classic. Until then, the Islanders will be working tirelessly to come together as a group while the newcomers learn the system.
"We will be really process oriented in the beginning and hopefully get more into game stuff and get more results oriented quickly," said Graystone. "That's just going to depend how quickly the players can get acclimated to our system and we can get them all on the same page.
"The important thing during preseason is that you don't skip steps, we have to keep hammering away to get it right before we move on to something else."
