ISLANDER VOLLEYBALL SIGNS THREE TO NLI
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team added three new players after signing Micah Nolan, Logen Bourque and Brooke Alverson to a National Letter of Intent to kick off the NCAA's early signing period.
The three in-state players are part of head coach Tony Graystone's first full signing class and will be looked on to continue building the Islander program.
"This is a strong class," said Graystone. "We are trying to add speed, depth, offense and ball control and I think we did all of those things.
"We'll see some immediate improvements to the team simply because we are adding some really talented kids."
Nolan is a highly decorated a 5-6 defensive specialist from Amarillo High School, the premier 5A team in Texas after winning the 2008 5A State Championship and being ranked as the #4 high school team in the nation by ESPN. They are also the first team in state history to win three consecutive state titles and are currently pursuing their fourth straight. This year they have been crowned the 2-5A District Champions and are currently poised to compete in the Region 1-5A tournament for the chance to return to the overall state tournament. Nolan led her team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) sweep of Arlington Lamar on Tuesday night with 11 kills and one service ace. She is in her second season as a varsity volleyball player for the Sandies, having helped her team to a 48-3 record last season and currently has her squad at 44-3 on the year. Nolan was a 2009 Lonestar Volleyball All-Texas Team Honorable Mention and the Amarillo HS Athlete of the Year. She has amassed 331 kills and 234 digs to this point in the season.
"Micah Nolan is a winner who is a three time 5A state champion and still in the playoffs now," said Graystone. "She will bring a tough, competitive mentality to our program and push for our libero position immediately.
"She is very fast, has great ball control as well as a real strong work ethic."
Bourque, a 5-11 setter from Clear Lake, will add more height and depth to the position in Graystone's second season. Bourque was named first team all-district this season was a second team performer last season. The Falcons recently lost to Dulles in five set battle at the Regional Quarterfinals after helping her team to an area championship. She was also named a 2009 Lonestar Volleyball Top Performer. Her team won district championships in 2006, 2007 and 2009 while also finishing as regional quarterfinalists during the 2008 season. She was named academic all-district from 2007-2009 holds a 4.1 grade point average.
"Logan Bourque is a very strong setter who is extremely athletic and quick," said Graystone. "She makes good decisions and is an offensive setter who will allow us to speed up our offense."
Alverson is a 6-1 middle blocker from Northwest High School in Justin who led District 5-5A in kills this past season with 483 while collecting 110 blocks and 45 service aces. Alverson was named to numerous all-tournament teams in her high school career and was a part of three state playoff teams. She was a 2008 Second Team All-District 5-5A selection and is in good position to be named to the all-district team once again this season after being the top scorer on the season and setting school records for kills in a district season at 483 and having 170 service aces in her career.
"Brooke Alverson is a really versatile player on the front row and will probably start with us as a middle blocker," said Graystone. "She is a strong offensive player who fits our system well and is going to be a big key to us scoring more from the middle."
