Beaumont - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team could not find an answer to a powerful Lamar attack as they lost a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-5) match at the home of the Lady Cardinals on Friday night.
The loss sends the Islanders to a 7-18 overall record with a 0-10 mark in Southland matches. Lamar improves to 12-10 on the year and 7-4 in Southland Conference contests.
In the first set, the Islanders fell behind 3-0 before coming back to tie the score at 4-4. The two teams battled back-and-forth as Lamar slowly built their lead. TAMUCC closed the gap to within three points at 12-9 but were unable to get any closer as they eventually fell by a 25-14 final to fall behind 1-0 in the match.
The second and third sets were all Lamar as they hit .455 in the second and .500 in the third as they controlled the sets from start to finish. The Lady Cardinals won a 25-8 final in the second and a 25-5 final in the third. Lamar hit a total of .442 for the match while allowing just four tie scores and no lead changes in the match.
Emma Ridley did the bulk of the scoring for the Islanders as she recorded 12 kills on the night. She now moves to 366 on the season, just seven away from tying the single-season school record of 373. With six matches left in the season, Ridley is set to shatter the old mark and looks to become the first Islander to ever top the 400 kills mark in a single season.
Jessica Korda added five kills while Jessica Jennett and Meagan Luber had one kill each as the only other Islanders to score in the match.
The team will look to put this one behind them quickly as they travel to Huntsville to take on Sam Houston State, the second place team in the Southland Conference on Halloween. Match time is set for 2 PM.
It will be a tough test for the Islanders as they look to rebound from their worst loss of the season. The two teams played a thrilling five-set match back on October 8 in Corpus Christi. The Bearkats have won their last 10 matches since a conference-opening loss against Lamar.
