The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team fell in another hard fought Southland Conference match on Saturday afternoon as they lost a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 18-25) decision to Lamar.
The loss drops the Islanders to 7-13 on the year and 0-5 in Southland play while Lamar improves to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in Southland matches.
Emma Ridley led the way for TAMUCC as she had her second straight match of more than 20 kills and her fifth such contest overall after notching 24 kills against the Cardinals.
In the first set, the Islanders and Cardinals played a close set in the early going with the two teams trading the lead six times with 10 tie scores. The final tie came at 12-12 before Courtney Wypiszynski reeled off two service aces to go with an attack error on Lamar to push the advantage to 15-12. The score would to within one at 17-16 but the Islanders would never relinquish the lead as they went on to take a 25-22 win for a 1-0 set lead.
Ridley led the team with six kills in the set as the only other Islander to score was Jessica Korda with three kills. Wypiszynski led the team with eight assists while Ridley and Tamara Wostal tied for the team lead with five digs each.
In the second set, the Islanders started out strong but were unable to hold on as in a tight set that evened the match at 1-1. The Islanders took the lead early on and were able to hold it for most of the period despite the back-and-forth action between the two teams that led to 10 tie scores but just one lead change. The Cardinals were eventually able to break through while trailing 16-14 to TAMUCC as they got a kill from Jayme Bazile and a pair of attack errors from the Islanders to take their first lead of the set at 17-16. Though the Islanders fought hard to try and regain the momentum, they could never get the score back to level as they went on to fall by a 25-22 score.
The third set saw the Cardinals withstand an early barrage by the Islanders to come back and take a 25-20 victory to go up 2-1 in the match. TAMUCC led early on by as many as four at 8-4 but Lamar would even the score at 10-10 soon after. The Islanders fell behind at 10-9 but were able to even the score at 11-11 a few moments later. The Cardinals slowly grew the lead however, as they outscored TAMUCC from that point on by a 14-9 margin.
In the final set, the Islanders took an early 10-5 lead on to see the lead slip away as the Cardinals scored 12 straight points with Adrianne Meengs serving to turn the five point deficit into a 17-10 advantage before the Islanders would score again. TAMUCC cut the lead down to five at 23-18 but could never get any closer as the Cardinals won 25-18 to take the match at 3-1.
Ridley led the team with 24 kills while Korda also added double-digit kills with 12 on the night. Wypiszynski and Sheridan Paulus were the next leading attackers with five kills each. Whitney Wehring added two kills and Meagan Luber had one to round out the night for the team. Wostal led the team in digs with 13 while Ridley added nine and Wehring rounded out the top three with five. Wypiszynski added two service aces to bring her team-leading total to 24 on the season.
The Islanders are next in action against this Monday, October 12 against Stephen F. Austin. The team will be looking for its first Southland Conference win as they host the Lady Jacks at Moody Fieldhouse with a 7 PM start.
