ISLANDERS FALL TO UTSA IN CONFERENCE HOME OPENER
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team lost a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-16) decision to the UTSA Roadrunners in the Southland home opener for the Islanders.
TAMUCC drops to 7-11 on the season and 0-3 in Southland Conference play. The Roadrunners improve to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in Southland matches.
In the first set, UTSA came out and quickly took a 3-0 lead before the Islanders fought back to tie it at 7-7. It would be the closest they would get however, as the Roadrunners took the lead and stretched it to as many as 11 at the end to take a 25-14 set win and put the match at 1-0.
TAMUCC came out with a revamped lineup in the second set, starting four different players from the first set to try and spark the team. The change seemed to work as the team played much better than in the first set, taking it down to the wire before falling by a 25-23 final. With the score tied 5-5, the Islanders took the lead on a UTSA service error and would hold the advantage for most of the set. They would grow the lead to as many as five at 15-10 but were unable to finish the set. The Roadrunners tied the score at 22-22 and outscored the Islanders 3-1 to close out the match with a 25-23 win and take a 2-0 lead.
"We made some changes as the match went along and I think they were the right things to do," said head coach Tony Graystone. "UTSA just made a big run at the end of the second one to steal the set from us."
After a draining loss in the second set, the Islanders were unable to answer the bell in the third as they fell by a 25-16 score to win the match 3-0. With the score tied at 2-2, UTSA went on a 15-5 run to stretch the lead to 10 points. TAMUCC made a short rally to get within 20-14 before UTSA closed the door by outscoring the Islanders by a 6-2 margin.
Jessica Korda was the only Islander in double-digits with 11 kills as Emma Ridley added six and Ariel Carlson added five. Courtney Wypisznyski, Sheridan Paulus, Shannon Hullum and Diandra Torres each added one kill. Wypisznyski had 23 assists to lead the team while Tamara Wostal and Ridley led the team with seven digs each.
TAMUCC is back in action next week for another pair of Southland matches. The Islanders host Sam Houston State next Thursday, October 8 and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, October 10 at Moody Fieldhouse.
"We just have to get ready for Sam Houston and correct mistakes we made today," said Graystone. "We have to work to get better every time out."
