Nacogdoches - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team ended the weekend on a positive note as they won their final match of the day, beating Alcorn State 3-0. The Islander fell to host-team Stephen F. Austin by a 3-0 score in a non-conference match earlier in the day.
The Islanders end the weekend at 6-8 after going 1-2 in the tournament. Junior outside hitter Emma Ridley picked up another individual honor as she was named to her third all-tournament team of the season, including the Sun Bowl Invite and HBU Husky Classic All-Tournament teams.
In the late match, the Islander came out in dominate form, winning a 3-0 decision over the Braves, the teams' fourth such win this season.
In the first set, the Islanders scored 15 of the first 16 points to jump out to a huge lead. Ridley contributed largely to the advantage with five kills in the early going. She would finish with six total in the set as TAMUCC went on to win by a 25-5 final. Sheridan Paulus added three kills, C.J. Downey had two and Shannon Hullum had one. Courtney Wypisznyski reached double-digits with 10 assists in the set.
In the second set, it was more of the same as the score reached 14-3 early on as the lead grew to as many as 15 at 24-9. The set finished with a 25-10 score. Jessica Korda did most of the damage in this one, as she reached seven kills in the second set. Hullum and Paulus each added three while Downey had two once again and Meagan Luber and Wypisznyski each had one. Wypisznyski also had 14 assists.
The final set was much closer than the first two, as the Braves fought to the end. The set was tied as late as 18-18 before the Islanders were able to pull away for a 25-20 win. Downey and Korda added a pair of kills each to help TAMUCC clinch the final set and take a 3-0 match win.
Korda finished with a match-high 11 kills for the Islanders, followed by Downey with nine, Paulus with seven, Ridley and Hullum with six each, Wypisznyski with two and Luber added one. Wypisznyski had 33 assists and seven digs in the match while Tamara Wostal also added seven to share the team lead.
In the first match of the day, the Islanders took on Southland rival SFA. They played competitively against the Ladyjacks but were unable to get any set wins against one of the better teams in the conference.
In the first set, the Islanders scored the first three points but could not continue the momentum as they fell by a 25-18 final. The second set was tied at 8-8 and was as close as 11-10 but the Ladyjacks pulled away once again, taking a 25-19 win. The final set quickly got away from the Islanders as they lost a 25-15 set to finish the match at a 3-0 deficit.
Ridley had a match-high 15 kills against the Ladyjacks. Korda added six, Hullum had four, Ariel Carlson had three, Paulus added two and Kandyce Nielson had one. Wypisznyski had 22 assists in the match and Wostal was the only Islander in double-digits for digs with 10.
The Ladyjack Invitational ends the pre-conference schedule for TAMUCC, as they will next be in action on Thursday, September 24 against Texas State in San Marcos for their first Southland Conference match. They follow that up with another road SLC match up against UT Arlington on Saturday, September 26 in Arlington.
