ISLANDER VOLLEYBALL STUMBLES AT LADYJACK INVITE

Nacogdoches - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team started strong but was unable to close out the match against Miami (OH) on Friday, losing 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 17-25, 19-25) at the Ladyjack Invitational hosted by Stephen F. Austin.

TAMUCC goes to 5-7 on the season while Miami goes to 4-6 on the year. It was the only match of the day for the Islanders.

The team started out strong in the first set, falling behind early but coming on strong to take a 1-0 lead. Down by four at 13-9, the Islanders worked their way back to a tie at 15-15. The two teams traded points until it was 18-18 before the Islanders took control and went on a 7-1 run to end the match at 25-19.

Emma Ridley led the team with nine kills on 17 attempts for a .461 hitting percentage in the set. Jessica Korda added three kills while Meagan Luber had two. Courtney Wypisznyski had 15 assists to go along with five digs and Tamara Wostal led the team with eight digs in the set.

The second set was a battle between the two teams, with six ties and two lead changes. The Islanders fell behind by as many as five points early on at 8-3, but they rallied back to tie it at 13-13 and kept it close throughout the rest of the set. It was tied as late as 22-22 before the Redhawks scored two of the three of the final four points to take the set 25-23 and even the match at 1-1.

The third set saw the Redhawks take the early lead and build upon it, stretching it to as many as 10 at 22-12 before finishing the set at 25-17. The final set was another close one, as there were seven ties and five lead changes before it was over. Neither team led by more than three points until the very end with the Redhawks taking a 25-19 victory to win the match at 3-1.

Ridley led the team with 17 kills while Korda also finished in double figures with 11 kills. Wypisznyski finished with 39 assists and 11 digs while Wostal finished with a team-high 21 digs. Ridley and Kandyce Nielson each finished with nine digs to follow close behind.

The Islanders continue play tomorrow starting at 12:30 PM against SFA and then once again against Alcorn State at 5 PM.
