ISLANDERS COME UP SHORT ON FINAL DAY OF DRAKE INVITE
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team had its first day of the season without a victory as they fell to Drake and South Dakota on Saturday at the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational. The pair of losses brings the Islanders record to 4-4 on the season.
In the first match of the day, the Islanders fell victim to the home team Drake Bulldogs in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-15) match that had the team overmatched in a hostile environment. TAMUCC dropped a more competitive match to South Dakota later in the evening by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-19) score to close out the tournament.
The early match saw Drake jump out to a quick 6-1 lead over the Islanders. TAMUCC was able to get back to within 10-6 and 14-10, but could never get any closer as the Bulldogs pulled away to a 25-15 win.
In the second set, the score was much closer in the early going as the Islanders went point-for-point with Drake with the score tied at 8-8. Drake finished the set on a 17-4 run to take a 25-12 win and go up 2-0.
The final set was even closer early on, with the score tied as late as 14-14 on a kill by Emma Ridley but the Islanders were outscored by an 11-1 margin to end the set and the match with a 25-15 loss.
Ridley led all players with a match-high 11 kills while Jessica Korda added eight, Ariel Carlson had five while Meagan Luber and Shannon Hullum had two each for TAMUCC. Courtney Wypisznyski had 23 assists to lead the team. Kandyce Nielson and Victoria Sookiasian had three digs apiece and Jessica Jennett had two.
In the late match, the Islanders took on South Dakota in a hard fought match before falling in three sets. The first set saw USD jump out to a 17-10 lead before the Islanders rallied to pull close at 18-16 behind opponent attack errors and kills by Korda, Hullum and an ace by Jennett. South Dakota had just enough to keep them at bay however, as they went on to a 25-21 set win.
In the second, the Islanders were tied as late as 11-11 and were within one point several times, including at 23-22, but South Dakota scored the final two points to take a 25-22 win. The final set saw TAMUCC jump out to a 4-1 lead but, they were unable to hold it as USD played to as much as a 17-12 advantage before ultimately winning 25-19 to take the match.
Match leaders for the Islanders were Korda with 10 kills, Ridley with seven Luber with six, Hullum with two and Carlson and Wypisznyski with one each. Wypisznyski also added 22 assists to her total in the late match. Nielson had 13 digs, Sookiasian had 12, Tamara Wostal and Wypisznyski had six each, Ridley had four, Jennett and Hullum had three each and Luber had one.
The Islanders return home looking to regroup from the weekend and get better ahead of their next contests a much closer to home tournament at Houston Baptist University in the HBU Husky Classic. They are scheduled to take on UPENN and Cal State-Bakersfield and host-school HBU. Game times are UPENN at 10:00 AM, CSU-Bakersfield at 5:30 PM on Friday, September 11 and HBU at 12:30 PM on Saturday, September 12.
