Arlington -- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team took the match to the limit before finally losing in five sets against UT Arlington, 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-8).
The Islanders fall to 4-21, 2-13 in Southland Conference play. UT Arlington improves to 7-22 on the year, 3-12 in SLC action.
Freshman Jessica Korda set a career-high with 23 kills to lead all players in the match while Molly McCabe had a match-high 61 assists.
In the first set, the Islanders fell behind early on but tied the set at 5-5. After that point, the Mavericks slowly pulled away, stretching their lead to as many as nine at 16-7, forcing the Islanders to call a timeout.
After the timeout, the Islanders scored the first four points to bring the score to 16-11. The two teams then proceeded to split the next 16 points to give the Mavericks a 25-19 set win and a 1-0 set advantage.
In the second set, the Mavericks took an early lead and led by as many as five at 12-7. After an Islanders timeout, TAMUCC sccored 7-of-8 points to take a 14-13 lead.
The teams battled to a 16-16 tie before the Islanders were able to gain any breathing room, scoring the next four points to take a 20-16 lead late in the set.
The Islanders eventually took a 25-21 set win on a Holly Watson kill to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the Islanders controlled much of the action, taking and holding an early lead until the Mavericks tied the match at 13-13. After UTA took a brief 14-13 lead, the Islanders once again assumed control, retaking the lead at 15-14 after a Lauren Paslay kill and never again trailing in the set.
The Islanders stretched the lead to 24-20 before eventually winning 25-22 on a Korda kill to give TAMUCC a 2-1 set lead.
In the fourth set, the two teams kept the score relatively close, with the score being tied as late as 17-17. The Mavericks scored 4-of-5 points to take a late 21-18 advantage.
The Islanders responded with a run of their own, scoring 3-of-4 points to pull to within 22-21 on the scoreboard.
The Mavericks would eventually take the set 25-22 to even the match at two sets each.
In the fifth and final set, the Islanders fell behind 6-0 early and were never able to recover. The Mavericks pushed the advantage to as much as eight at 10-2.
The Islanders were able to outscore the Mavericks over the last 11 points by a 6-5 margin, but it was not enough as the Mavericks took the set 15-8 and the match by a 3-2 set score.
Korda had 23 kills to lead all players while Kasey McBrearty added 19. Amber Benjamin was the only other Islander in double-digits with 10 kills.
McCabe had 61 assists while Kandyce Nielson added 20 digs to lead the Islanders. Whitney Wehring added 17 digs and Victoria Sookiasian had 14.
The Islanders finish their season on Saturday night against Texas State. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
