ISLANDER VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN THREE SETS AT UTSA
San Antonio The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) against UTSA on the road in Southland Conference action.
The Islanders fall to 3-19, 1-11 in the SLC while UTSA moves to 17-9, 9-3 in SLC action.
In the first set, the Islanders scored first on a kill by Jessica Korda to take an early 1-0 lead. After two points by UTSA to take a 2-1 lead, another Korda kill evened the match at 2-2.
After UTSA jumped out to a 5-2 lead, the Islanders pulled to within 9-8 on a third kill by Korda.
The Islanders were not able to get any closer however, as the Roadrunners stretched their lead to 20-14 late in the set. The two teams split the next eights points with four each to put the set at 24-18 before an Islander attack error gave the Roadrunners the set at 25-18 and an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, UTSA took an early 2-0 lead and never trailed, leading by as many as eight points at 18-10 before forcing the Islanders to call a timeout. After the break, TAMUCC scored the first two points to make it 18-12, but it was not enough as the Roadrunners outscored the Islanders 7-4 over the next 11 points.
The final point came on a block assist by Stefanie Robbins and Amber Brooks to give the Roadrunners a 25-16 set win and extend the match to a 2-0 lead in favor of UTSA.
In the third and final set, the Islanders would not go quietly, battling early on to a 6-6 stalemate and keeping the score close at 10-9 in favor of UTSA.
After trading points to go to 11-10, the Roadrunners scored the next seven points to take a commanding 18-10 lead. The Islanders would outscore the Roadrunners 8-to-7 over the next 16 points, but it was not enough as UTSA scored a 25-18 win in the set to take a 3-0 match win.
Korda led the Islanders in kills on the night with 10, followed by Lauren Paslay with six kills and Kasey McBrearty with five kills.
Molly McCabe led the Islanders with 25 assists on the night to go along with 10 kills for her fifth double-double on the season. Kandyce Nielson notched 21 digs to lead the Islanders for the match.
The Islanders return home this weekend for their final home stand of the season, taking on Southeastern Louisiana Friday night at Moody Fieldhouse with a 7 p.m. start time. The Islanders then take on Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. for senior night, honoring the three Islanders seniors, Lauren Paslay, Kasey McBrearty and Amber Benjamin.
