ISLANDERS FALL TO SAM HOUSTON IN FOUR SETS

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team fell 3-1(25-18, 23-25, 25-27, 21-25) to Sam Houston in a tough four set Southland Conference battle at Moody Fieldhouse as 16 kills each from Lauren Paslay and Jessica Korda were not enough for the Islanders.

The Islanders fall to 3-18 on the year, 1-10 in SLC play. Sam Houston moves to 11-16, 6-5 in SLC action.

Early on, the Islanders looked to be in control. After falling behind 2-0 to start the first set, the Islanders came back to knot the game at 3-3. The Bearkats again jumped out to a small lead at 11-8, but the Islanders came back to tie the set at 11-11.

After evening the score, the Islanders went on a tear, scoring the next six points in a row and a total of eight of the next nine to take a 19-12 lead. After that point, the Islanders and Bearkats split the next 12 point, scoring six points each to give the Islanders the first set win at 25-18.

Korda led way for the Islanders, notching six kills. Amber Benjamin added three kills while Paslay had two.

"Korda was big for us today." said Head Coach Kimberly Martinez. "Overall, we did some good things out there but the little things hurt us."

In the second set, the Islanders once again looked to be in control, jumping out to a 20-13 lead over the Bearkats. The Bearkats came roaring back, scoring the next six points to bring the game back to 20-19.

After a Benjamin kill put the score at 21-19 in favor of the Islanders, the Bearkats reeled off four straight points to take a 23-21 lead. The two teams split the next four points to give the Bearkats a 25-23 win and even the match at 1-1.

In set three, the two teams were nearly identical, sharing the lead 16 times and swapping the lead another 10 times. With the set tied at 25-25, the Bearkats Courtney Laskowski notched a kill to put Sam Houston up 26-25 and at set point.

An Islander attack error gave the Bearkats the set at 27-25 and put Sam Houston up 2-1 in the match.

"We outplayed them on the scoresheet." said Coach Martinez. "We have to do a better job of putting it all together on the court."

In set four, the Islanders kept fighting and quickly took a 14-11 lead. The two teams went back-and-forth with the Islanders maintaining their three point lead all the way to 19-16.

The Bearkats would not be denied as they quickly put together the next six points to take a 22-19 advantage.

A Paslay kill got the Islanders back to within 22-20, but it would not be enough. The Bearkats scored three of the next four points to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Korda and Paslay led the Islanders with 16 kills each. Benjamin also added double-digit kills with 13. Molly McCabe led the Islanders with 47 kills, her third-highest total of the season.

Victoria Sookiasian added an individual season-high tying 11 digs to lead the Islanders. Benjamin added six blocks while Korda added five to pace the Islanders.

The Islanders are back in action this coming Tuesday, November 4 at UTSA. Match time is set for 7 p.m.

"We have a short turnaround for a tough game." said Coach Martinez. "We have to try to put it all together against UTSA on Tuesday."
