VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN THREE SETS AT LAMAR

Beaumont, Texas- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team fell to Southland Conference opponent Lamar by a score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16).

TAMUCC falls to 3-12 on the year, 1-4 in the SLC while Lamar improves to 6-8 overall, 4-1 in SLC play.

The Islanders were never able to gain traction in the first match, with the last tie being when Chelsea Myers recorded a kill to make it 2-2.

The Cardinals slowly pulled away, building their lead to as many as eight before closing out the match on a Lauren Holdorff kill to give Lamar the first set.

Kasey McBrearty recorded five of her team-high 10 kills in the first set but it was not enough as the Cardinals built an insurmountable lead and put the final margin of the set at 25-18.

In the second set, the Islanders grabbed an early lead when Lauren Paslay and Jessica Korda combined on a block assist for the first point of the set and McBrearty added another kill to make it 2-0 in favor of the Islanders.

The Cardinals came back to tie the game at 2-2 but a kill by Paslay once again put the Islanders ahead at 3-2.

After falling behind 5-4, a Jessica Jennett kill knotted the set at 5-5. The Cardinals would score four of the next five points to go ahead 10-6.

After a timeout called by the Islanders, they reeled off four straight points on back-to-back Paslay kills, a Paslay and Jennett block assist and a kill by Jessica Korda to tie the game once again, this time at 10-10.

It would be the last time the game would be level however, as the Cardinals outscored the Islanders 15-9 the rest of the way, finishing the set off on a Kaci Brewer kill to take a 2-0 lead in sets.

In the third set, a Jennett service ace and Diandra Torres kill quickly gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead. After a point by the Cardinals, a service error on Lamar added to the Islander lead at 3-1.

Lamar would then score five straight points to take a 6-3 advantage, a lead they would never relinquish. The Cardinals quickly built a five point lead at 10-5 and had their advantage reach as many as 11 at 19-8.

The Islanders fought to get back within striking distance, whittling the lead down to eight before the Cardinals eventually closed out the set and match at 25-16 on another set-clinching kill by Brewer of the Cardinals.

McBrearty led the Islanders with 10 kills in the match as well as a team-high 11 kills. Jennett had a season-high 25 assists to lead the Islanders. Paslay and Jennett led TAMUCC in block assists with two each.

Brewer led the Cardinals with a match-high 16 digs while Shalayne Blythe had a match-high 12 kills. Ashley Todd added another match-high with 44 assists.

The Islanders look to regroup before taking on Stephen F. Austin next Wednesday night, October 15 in a midweek SLC matchup. After the midweek match, the Islanders return home to take on McNeese State at Moody Fieldhouse on Saturday, October 18 at 2 p.m.
