ISLANDER VOLLEYBALL HOSTS UTSA IN DIG PINK MATCH
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team will be hosting the UTSA Roadrunners in a Southland Conference match this Friday at Moody Fieldhouse. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Islanders look to build momentum this Friday as they are coming off a program first in their last match against UT Arlington. When the Islanders beat the Mavericks last Saturday afternoon, it was the first time in the volleyball program's history they had done so. The win evened their mark at 1-1 in the conference.
Lauren Paslay comes into the match leading the Islanders in kills with 130 while Kasey McBrearty is second on the team with 96. Molly McCabe leads the team in assists with 356 while Kandyce Nielson leads in digs with 105.
UTSA comes into the match with a record of 9-6 and 2-0 in SLC play. The Roadrunners have won eight consecutive matches.
Kendra Rowland leads UTSA and the SLC with a total of 220 kills on the season. Teammate Elise Huskey is second on the team with 140 kills. Kelsey Jewasko leads the SLC in digs with 260 and is the reigning SLC Defensive Player of the Week.
The two teams have common SLC opponents, having played both Texas State and UT Arlington last weekend. The Islanders split their pair of matches, falling 3-0 to Texas State and sweeping UT Arlington by a score of 3-0. The Roadrunners defeated both teams, beating UT Arlington and Texas State by identical 3-1 scores.
The match will be part of the national "Dig Pink" movement being hosted at college volleyball matches throughout the country.
The "Dig Pink" campaign is part of the fight against breast cancer and promotes breast cancer awareness through college athletics and will be benefiting the First Friday foundation.
The project was taken on locally by Dr. Liette Ocker and the "Promotion of Sport" class that she teaches. The class slogan was "Making Change In 08". The students placed cans around the campus to collect change for the cause and also solicited donations from private citizens and businesses.
The class collected donations totaling over $1,530 so far and will be accepting donations at the match this Friday night.
There will also be a dunk tank, a car smash, Izzy The Islander and a fun jump outside of Moody Fieldhouse before the match.
Several organizations will also setup booths outside of Moody to promote breast cancer awareness.
