CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team has signed Clara Carotta (Saint-Privat, France) to a National Letter of Intent. The incoming freshman will join the reigning Southland Conference champions for the 2014 fall season.
"We are extremely excited to sign a player of Clara's high caliber," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "Her junior results make her one of the top recruits we have ever brought to the Island. What we are most excited about is the high-character person and teammate that Clara is. We did a lot of homework on her and we just kept being more and more impressed with her as a player and a person.
"Assistant Coach Aurelien Tave did a lot of the legwork on Clara, so I give him a real salute for landing such a blue-chip player for our team. I'm very proud of Aurelien and impressed with the hard work he put in."
Carotta, a six-time regional champion in juniors, has participated at the French Championships three times, which is played at Roland Garros. She is also a strong doubles player and will help add depth to the Islanders' lineup. In 2013, she advanced to the semifinals of doubles play at the French Championships.
She will join the Islanders, who are coming off their most successful year in Islanders history. The team had a historic season as they clinched their first Southland regular-season title and tournament championship along with their first NCAA Tournament berth. The Islanders also tallied a program-best 22 wins and won 16 of their last 18 matches.
