Women’s Tennis Earns Program-Best 18th Win with 5-2 Victory over UIW

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team earned their 10th consecutive Southland Conference victory today with a 5-2 win over Incarnate Word (5-18, 1-11 SLC) to conclude regular-season road play. With the win, the Islanders (18-5, 10-1 SLC) have set a new program record of 18 wins and have now won 12 of their last 13 matches.

"Give Incarnate Word credit, it was their senior day and they really fought hard," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "This was not an easy match on the road. We lacked energy at the beginning in the doubles, but I felt like we really made the choice to come out with incredible energy and sense of purpose in the singles."

The Islanders, who have already secured a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament next weekend, hosted by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, are at the top of the Southland standings with Northwestern State. The women's team is one match away from clinching their first ever Southland Conference regular-season title.

A&M - Corpus Christi dropped the doubles point today before winning five of the six singles matches today. The pair of Stefania Nicolae and Venesa Figueroa teamed up for the first time this season in the No. 3 slot to sweep Christina Rodriguez and Brianah Creek, 8-0. However, the Cardinals answered with wins on courts one and two to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The senior-freshman duo of Sandra Burges and Judit Vives snapped a three-match winning streak today after falling to Ivana Katavic and Andi Botha, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles. The tandem of sophomores Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin then dropped a tight 8-5 loss in the No. 2 spot to Sarah Savedra and Jennifer Betancourt.

A&M - Corpus Christi answered back in singles play to win five straight-set victories. Kerry Galhos evened the match at 1-1 after winning her third straight match in No. 6 singles. The freshman cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kelsey Reblin to improve to 13-3 in singles action and 9-1 in the Southland. Burges then followed suit with her program best 58th career-singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Taryn Strahl in No. 5 singles. The senior also improved her conference mark to 10-1 and her overall season record to 17-5. Martin padded the Islanders lead to 3-1 after downing Betancourt, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 slot, to win her third straight match.

For the third consecutive match, Rodriguez clinched the match for the Islanders in No. 4 singles. The sophomore notched her 11th straight singles match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Botha and now has tallied a 15-0 record in the No. 4 spot. She also holds an overall 18-3 mark, including a 9-1 record in Southland action.

Vives also picked up her 11th consecutive singles victory with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Savedra in No. 2 singles. The freshman now holds a 17-1 singles record in her first year and a 10-1 mark in the conference. She has also registered a 5-0 mark at No. 2 singles.

The Cardinals picked up their second and final point of the day in No. 1 singles after Nicolae fell in a tough three-setter to Katavic. After dropping the first set, Nicolae bounced back to sweep the second set, 6-0. In the third, Katavic edged out the senior, 7-5.

The women's team will join the men's team for their final regular-season match on Monday, April 21, at 1 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center against New Orleans. The match will also be the final regular-season match for seniors Burges, Nicolae, Ashley GarzaCassie Shaw, along with Matt Westmoreland for the men's team.
