CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams will return to the courts Wednesday, April, 16, in a neutral-site match in Austin, Texas, against first-year Southland member Abilene Christian. Both matches will take place at 10 a.m. at the Austin Tennis Academy.
The Islanders have both secured spots in the Southland Conference Tournament, hosted by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, and are at the top of the Southland standings. The women's team (16-5, 8-1 SLC) moved into a tie with Northwestern State for first place in the conference on Monday, after topping Oral Roberts, 4-1 at the HEB Tennis Center. The Islanders have won eight straight in conference play and 10 of their last 11 matches. The men's team (15-9, 4-0 SLC) clinched their fourth straight Southland match on Friday to stay undefeated in conference play. The Islanders have won three straight after posting wins last week against Lamar, Incarnate Word and Nicholls.
In singles play, Celia Rodriguez and Judit Vives continue to highlight the women's team with outstanding play. On Monday, Rodriguez extended her winning streak to nine matches after clinching the match for the Islanders. She improved her impressive mark at No. 4 singles to 13-0. She holds an overall 16-3 mark and a 7-1 record in the Southland.
Vives notched a third-set tiebreaker against ORU for her ninth straight singles victory. The freshman has registered a 15-1 record in singles play in her first year, and an 8-1 mark in the conference. She has also tallied a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles.
Senior Sandra Burges has been a warrior for the Islanders in singles action. She has collected an 8-1 record in conference play after posting a straight-set victory on Monday in No. 5 singles. The Zaragoza, Spain native holds a 15-5 overall record and a 10-2 mark in the No. 5 slot.
Rodriguez and Maider Martin have highlighted doubles play this season for the women's team. The sophomore duo is on a six-match winning streak with three wins apiece at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. They hold an 11-4 record and 5-1 mark in the conference.
Abilene Christian (15-4, 7-2 SLC) enters Wednesday's match on a four-match winning streak after picking up conference victories against Lamar, Sam Houston State, McNeese State and Nicholls. Nada Marjanovic leads the Wildcats in singles play with a 16-3 dual mark and an 8-1 record in Southland play. She has spent most of her time in the No. 5 spot where she has collected a 12-3 mark. In No. 1 singles, Micah Hermsdorf has tallied a 15-4 dual mark and a 7-2 record in the conference.
On the men's side, the Islanders are on a quest to win their seventh Southland Conference title. The men's team has lost just one regular-season Southland Conference match in the last eight years since Coach Moore returned to take over the men's team in 2007. The Islanders are at the top of the Southland with the Wildcats, who are ineligible for the postseason, with a 4-0 record.
Peter Nagy has powered the men's team this season with a perfect 4-0 record in Southland play at No. 1 singles and holds a team-best 16-3 record. The Budapest, Hungary native has registered a 13-1 career record in the Southland, with his only loss in his career in conference play coming during his freshman year.
Along with Nagy, sophomore Javier Pujol has been a consistent player for the Islanders in both singles and doubles play. Last week, Pujol posted singles and doubles victories in all three of the Islanders Southland matches to power the men's team to a perfect 4-0 record in conference play. For his performance, he was named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week today for the second time in his career and the first time this season. Pujol is undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record and has collected a 13-9 overall mark. In doubles action, he has teamed up with fellow sophomore Ricardo Mayagoitia in the No. 3 slot, and the duo has secured all three of their conference matches.
The Wildcats (12-9, 4-0 SLC) have won three straight, including a 5-2 victory over Lamar on Sunday. Marco Bensley leads the Wildcats with a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play while Nico Agritelley and Guilherme Gesser have both posted a 3-1 mark in Southland play.
The Islanders men's and women's teams will meet the Wildcats for the first time in program history on Wednesday.
Following the matches, the Islanders women's team will travel to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word for their final regular-season road match on Saturday, April 19. The women will then join the men's team for their final regular-season matches on Monday, April 21, against New Orleans at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
