CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team will continue play at home Monday, April 14, against conference foe Oral Roberts. Due to the strong possibility of rain, the match will be played at the HEB Tennis Center with doubles play slated for 12 p.m.
The Islanders (15-5, 7-1 SLC) have won seven straight Southland Conference matches and are seeking their eighth conference victory of the season. Prior to Saturday's tough non-conference loss to No. 27 Houston, A&M - Corpus Christi had won nine straight including consecutive victories over Sam Houston State and Lamar in conference play.
Rodriguez is on an eight-match winning streak and has tallied a team-best 15 wins in singles play, including a perfect 12-0 mark in No. 4 singles. She is 6-1 in the conference in singles action and has teamed up with fellow sophomore Maider Martin in doubles play for an 11-4 record and a 5-1 mark in the conference. The duo are on a six-match winning streak with three wins apiece at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Vives, who has also won eight straight, holds a 14-1 singles record, including a 7-1 mark in Southland play. The Barcelona, Spain native started out at No. 6 singles at the beginning of the season, worked her way up to No. 3, before picking up two wins at No. 2 singles. In doubles play, Vives and senior Sandra Burges have won two straight at No.1 singles and have posted a 9-4 overall record.
Burges along with senior Stefania Nicolae have had an incredible career for the Islanders and their experience will be crucial for the Islanders in these next four Southland matches. Nicolae enters Monday's match with a 53-20 career dual-match record and currently stands at 27-11 in conference play in her four years. Burges' record is just as remarkable with a career dual-match record of 55-21 and a conference match record of 28-11 in her four years. This season, Burges is 7-1 in conference action and holds an overall mark of 14-5, including a 9-2 record at No. 5 singles.
Oral Roberts enters Monday's match with a 3-13 record and a 0-9 mark in the Southland. The Golden Eagles have dropped their last two matches, including a close 4-3 loss to Incarnate Word on Saturday. Marizanne Bouwer is 6-10 on the year in singles play while Ximena Puentes is 5-11 in No. 4 singles. In doubles action, Haley Martin and Puentes have won four consecutive matches at No. 2 doubles for a 7-5 record.
Last season, the Islanders topped the Golden Eagles, 6-1, on senior day at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Islanders garnered the doubles point before picking up five straight singles wins. Returners Martin, Nicolae and Burges all secured singles victories.
Following Monday's match, the women's team will embark on their final two conference road matches of the year. First up is a neutral-site match against first-year Southland member Abilene Christian on Wednesday, April 16, in Austin, Texas, at 10 a.m.
