CORPUS CHRISTI – Freshman Judit Vives has been named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced today. She led the women's team to their eighth consecutive victory on Sunday while posting singles wins in all three matches last week. It marks her first career weekly honor and the second for the Islanders (14-4, 7-1 SLC) this season.
"We're all very proud of Judit," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "She has improved so much and has put in so much hard work since she arrived here in January. Her winning is very impressive. It's really just a symptom of how incredible hard she competes and her constant positive attitude. She has been exceptional strong in those two areas. The spirit she competes with lifts all of her teammates up.
"We're all trying to build lasting memories in this journey of college sports, but with what Judit did last week, clinching two big road matches in front of her parents, who surprised her and flew in from Spain – that is a special lasting memory."
Vives improved to a team-best 14-1 singles record after picking up three straight-set victories over Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State and Lamar last week. She started out the week with a sweeping 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles over Prairie View A&M before clinching the third straight Southland Conference match for the Islanders. Vives secured the match for the Islanders over Sam Houston State with a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 2 singles.
The Barcelona, Spain native started out at No. 6 singles at the beginning of the season, worked her way up to No. 3, before earning her first win at No. 2. On Sunday, Vives earned her second win of the season at No. 2 singles and a team-high eighth straight victory with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lamar to improve to 7-1 in Southland play.
The Islanders have won eight straight including seven in conference play to move into second place in the Southland standings. The team returns to action on Wednesday, April 9, when they trek to Edinburg, Texas, to face Texas-Pan American for the second time this season. The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 26, but inclement weather forced the teams to postpone.
