CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team clinched their sixth consecutive victory today, downing Prairie View A&M 6-1 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Islanders improve to 12-4 on the year after topping the Panthers (4-11) for the second time this season.
A&M - Corpus Christi came out strong to secure five straight singles matches and take a 5-0 lead. Judit Vives put the Islanders on the board with her sixth consecutive singles victory after sweeping Donielle Richard, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 3 singles. The freshman is now 12-1 in singles play and 5-0 in the No. 3 slot. Celia Rodriguez kept the momentum going with her sixth straight singles victory to put the Islanders up 2-0. The sophomore cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sydney Thomas in No. 4 singles to improve her singles record to 13-3, including a 10-0 record in the No. 4 spot. Stefania Nicolae followed with her second consecutive victory in No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Taylor LeFridge, before senior Cassie Shaw clinched the match for the Islanders in No. 6 singles. In her first career singles match, Shaw topped Payton Gore, 6-2, 6-2, to secure the match for the Islanders.
Sandra Burges tacked on another point for the Islanders after breezing past Maria Lackey, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot to improve to 11-4 in singles play. In the final singles match of the day, Brittany Harrell forced Maider Martin to a third-set super tiebreaker in No. 2 singles. Martin secured the first set, 6-1, before dropping the second set, 6-4. In the third, Harrell captured the 10-7 win to tally the first point of the day for the Panthers.
The Islanders kept the momentum going into doubles play to win all three matches. Nicolae and Shaw teamed up for the first time this season in No. 3 doubles to blank Gore and Richard, 8-0. The freshman-senior duo of Vives and Burges then breezed past Harrell and LeFridge, 8-2, in No. 1 doubles to clinch the point and improve to 8-4 on the year. The tandem of Martin and Rodriguez picked up their fifth straight doubles victory with an 8-4 win over Thomas and Lackey in the No. 2 slot to conclude the match. The duo now holds a 10-4 record on the year in doubles play.
The Islanders will remain at home to host a pair of Southland Conference matches this weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, starting with Sam Houston State on Saturday, April 5 at 12 p.m. The Islanders will then host Lamar on Sunday, April 6, at 12 p.m. in conference play.
