Women’s Tennis Starts Three-Match Homestand Thursday
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team will host their next three matches at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center starting with a non-conference match on Thursday, April 3, against Prairie View A&M. Play is set to start at 2:40 p.m. and it will mark the second time the Islanders and Panthers have met up this season.
A&M - Corpus Christi (11-4, 5-1 SLC) has won their last five matches, including five straight in Southland Conference play. The Islanders are coming off a 4-3 thrilling victory over Nicholls on Sunday. The Islanders dropped a tight doubles point before freshman Judit Vives clinched the match in No. 3 singles for the second straight day. Stefania Nicolae, Celia Rodriguez and Kerry Galhos also picked up singles wins for the Islanders.
This season, the two freshmen, Vives and Galhos, have been exceptional in singles play. Vives is on a five-match winning streak and holds an 11-1 record, including a perfect 6-0 mark in the No. 6 slot. Her only loss of the season came in No. 4 singles at Northwestern State. The Barcelona, Spain native has also teamed up with senior Sandra Burges in doubles play to tally a 7-4 mark.
Vives had the biggest weekend of her freshman career for the Islanders last weekend in front of her parents who flew in from Spain to surprise her at McNeese State and Nicholls. Against McNeese State, Vives clinched the match for the Islanders in No. 3 singles over the Cowgirls, who were undefeated in Southland play. Vives then followed her performance with a clinching three-set win in No. 3 singles over Nicholls to lift the Islanders to a 4-3 victory. With the match tied at 3-3, Vives rose up and clinched the third set, 6-2. She earned Southland Conference Honorable Mention honors on Tuesday for her performance.
Galhos is on a team-best six-match winning streak at No. 6 singles and comes into Thursday's match with an 10-2 singles record and a 6-0 mark in conference play, with all six coming at No. 6 singles.
Burges has been a strong vocal leader for the Islanders. The senior holds an overall mark of 10-4 and has teamed up with Vives in all 15 doubles matches for a 7-4 overall record.
Rodriguez, a consistent leader for the Islanders, started the season with a perfect 5-0 singles record in the No. 4 spot. After moving up to No. 3 singles, she has tallied a 3-3 mark for an overall record of 12-3. Against Nicholls the sophomore earned her team-high 12th victory of the season in singles play, including her ninth win in the No. 4 position. The native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, has teamed up with sophomore Maider Martin in doubles play this season. The tandem has won their last four matches to improve to 5-1 in conference play and 9-4 overall.
Prairie View A&M enters Thursday's match with a 4-10 record after falling to Southeastern Louisiana 6-0 on Monday.
Earlier this season the Islanders downed the Panthers 5-0 in Prairie View, Texas. The Islanders earned the doubles point before Nicolae, Martin, Burges and Rodriguez secured their singles matches.
Following Thursday's match, the Islanders will host a pair of Southland Conference matches this weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, starting with Sam Houston State on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. The Islanders will then host Lamar on Sunday, April 6, at 12 p.m. in conference play.
