Islanders, Broncs Meet Again Wednesday in Edinburg

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Edinburg, Texas, to take on Texas-Pan American for the second time this season. The Islanders (5-2) swept the Broncs 6-0 in the first meeting on a wet, windy and cold day at the HEB Tennis Center.

"We know this is going to be a very tough match," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "UTPA was just down in Corpus and they have a very strong team of good young players. We know we are going to have to be focused and be ready to battle tomorrow."

A&M - Corpus Christi is coming off a 4-0 sweeping victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on the road and will play their fourth straight road match on Wednesday. Highlighting the team is Celia Rodriguez who was named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week last week. The sophomore is 6-1 in singles play and 4-1 in No. 3 doubles play with fellow sophomore Maider Martin.

Judit Vives has also been superb in her first year as an Islander. The freshman kept her perfect streak alive in singles play at Louisiana-Lafayette with a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set victory over Eleanor Bradshaw to improve to 5-0 in No. 6 singles. The Barcelona, Spain native is also undefeated in doubles play with senior Sandra Burges in the No. 2 spot. The pair topped ULL's Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement, 8-6 to improve to 4-0 on the year.

The Broncs are on a four-match winning streak and will come into Wednesday's match with a 5-3 record after wins against South Dakota State, Chicago State, Valparaiso, Incarnate Word and Prairie View A&M. UTPA has dropped losses to No. 19 Baylor, Texas State and the Islanders this season.

In the last meeting between the Islanders and Broncs, A&M - Corpus Christi swept all six singles matches to secure the win. Stefania Nicolae, Martin, Burges, Rodriguez, Kerry Galhos and Vives all recorded wins. Nicolae, Burges and Rodriguez were forced to three-setters while Rodriguez clinched the match in No. 4 singles.

The Islanders will remain on the road to face New Mexico State in Houston on Sunday, March 2.
