Top Moment #5: Women’s Tennis Starts 8-0 to Enter Rankings

CORPUS CHRISTI – Throughout the summer of 2013, will look back at the best moments and athletic performances from the 2012-13 school year.

Top Moment #5: Women's Tennis Starts 8-0 to Enter Rankings

The Islanders Women's Tennis Team made history on Feb. 26, when they broke into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 75 at No. 60 for the first time in program history.

The Islanders jumped out to an impressive 8-0 start, including a season-opening win over then-No. 75 Houston on the road. The team continued their winning streak with victories over UTSA, Louisiana - Lafayette, Central Arkansas, Prairie View A&M, St. Mary's (TX) and two wins over Texas - Pan American.

Following the Islanders 6-1 victory over former Southland rival UTSA, the team joined No. 55 Ohio State, No. 56 Arizona, No. 57 Tennessee, No. 58 South Florida, No. 59 Southern Illinois in the ITA Top 75 rankings. The Islanders were ranked ahead of No. 61 Washington State, No. 62 Delaware, No. 63 LSU, No. 64 San Jose State and No. 65 Kansas. The ITA Top 75 is a ranking of nearly 400 NCAA Division I schools in the United States.

Under the instruction of Director of Tennis, Steve Moore, the Islanders earned the best finish in school history both for the regular season and conference tournament, along with setting a school record with 17 wins. Over the last two seasons, the team tallied a 33-9 overall record as they rose in the Southland Conference.
