Women’s Tennis Looks For First Win In Southland Conference Tournament
In a year of highs for the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team, the group will be looking to add another first on Thursday in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament against Northwestern State.
The Islanders will be trying for their first win in the tournament ever, and will look to avenge a 4-3 loss earlier in the season against the Lady Demons, who also knocked Texas A&M – Corpus Christi out of the tournament last year.
Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan will lead the team into the tournament after earning All-Southland honors this week at the No. 2 doubles position. Mirna Cicak will play the No. 1 position for the Islanders, while Doris Kuselj is at No. 2, Burges at No. 3, Stefania Nicolae at No. 4, Horan at No. 5 and Mia Matuszak at the No. 6 position.
The match will pit the No. 4 and 5 seeds in the Southland, as the teams tied in the regular season, and NSU owned the tiebreaker by virtue of their regular season win.
The first match came down to a 4-3 final, with the deciding singles point coming in a three-set thriller that ended 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 at the No. 4 position.
With the team healthy for the first time since the start of the season after battling injuries throughout the year, the Islanders will look to earn their inaugural win over a team that has been their nemesis the past two years.
