HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team picked up another big victory on Saturday afternoon, taking a 6-1 final over Sam Houston State at the McAdams Tennis Center.
"Without a doubt, this was the best team win we've had this year," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I felt like every girl really competed with tremendous intensity today.
"This is the type of match I want to see us duplicate day in and day out."
The Islanders improved to 12-4 overall, and are now 5-3 in Southland Conference matches. Sam Houston is 11-6 this season, 5-4 in league contests. Even without a strong player in Mia Matuszak, who sat out due to injury, the team was able to pull out the victory in one of the most complete matches they have played this season.
In doubles, the team played outstanding, taking all three matches, including a nail biter at No. 2 by an 8-7 final.
Ashley Garza and Stefania Nicolae got things going with an 8-3 final at No. 3 doubles, while Mirna Cicak and Doris Kuselj clinched the point with an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position. That left just Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan on the court at No. 2 doubles, and the pair came through with an 8-7 (7-2) victory to sweep the doubles point.
"This was a great team win, every single girl fought their hearts out and really contributed to this," said Moore. "I was very proud of Ashley Garza, she stepped into a pivotal conference match and played lights out in doubles for us today.
"That showed a lot of poise under pressure."
In singles, all but one Islander player won their match, with the lone loss coming in a three-set thriller.
At No. 1, Cicak took a highly contested 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 match to add to the Islanders advantage. No. 2 saw Kuselj get back in the win column with a 6-3, 6-3 win to add another point to the Islanders lead.
Burges and Horan made quick work of their matches in singles, with Burges winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Horan taking a 6-0, 6-2 final at the No. 5 match. LeAnne Mascall took a 6-3, 6-1 final at the No. 6 position to complete the match.
"I was very proud of the way LeAnne Mascall rose up and played at No. 6 singles," said Moore. "Doris and Mirna played unbelievably tough and Sandra has been an anchor for the team this whole year.
"I was really proud of Chelsea Horan and Doris Kuselj playing injured and grinding out wins even while they were banged up. That shows the type of heart and character they have."
The only loss of the day came at No. 4, with Nicolae falling in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to finish the match scoring.
Next up for the Islanders will be a big home weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The women will play McNeese on Saturday, April 14, and Lamar on Sunday, April 15 in the final two home matches of the season. The men will also play their final home match that Saturday, hosting UTSA in a key Southland Conference match.
