Women’s Tennis Topples Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference Tilt

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team picked up its 10th win of the year on Monday, taking down Southeastern Louisiana 5-1 at a neutral site on the University of Houston campus.

"We're very grateful to the University of Houston, their coaches and administration for allowing us to play here today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore.

In a match that was rescheduled from an earlier date due to weather, the Islanders and Lady Lions started singles play first and agreed to only play doubles if the score was tied after all six singles were complete.

The Islanders are now 10-2 on the year, including a 3-1 mark in Southland Conference play. The Lady Lions fall to 8-7 on the year, 1-5 in league matches.

"This match was a great battle, it was much closer than the score indicates," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "Our girls had to really fight to make this happen today.

"I'm very proud of how tough these girls were, along with the grit and tenacity they showed in winning this match."

Sandra Burges picked up the quickest win of the day, dominating in a 6-1, 6-1 final over Adriana Castillo at the No. 3 singles position. Stefania Nicolae earned a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 4 over Margane Dadot.

"This was our kind of day, it was extremely hot and I felt like our fitness really helped us today," said Moore. "I thought that Sandra and Stefania played incredibly focused matches.

"Everybody else was in a battle, but those two put us up very early. I really like character and the toughness of these girls, and I feel like that even more after today."

At No. 1 singles, Mirna Cicak won by identical scores against Audrey Chelini, taking a 6-4, 6-4 final over the top player from SELA.

Mia Matuszak won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles against Isabel Brito, and Chelsea Horan gutted out a tough 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 final over Morgane Charpenne at the No. 5 position.

Doris Kuselj suffered the only loss of the day for the Islanders, falling in a gritty 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 final against Laura Verges at No. 2 singles.

"Southeastern Louisiana is a team I always have a lot of respect for," said Moore. "I feel like they have one of the top coaches and they are always a tough team to play.

"We knew they were going to battle us hard today, having just beaten McNeese the day before, but I felt good about the way our girls rose up today when they needed to. They showed a lot of character and toughness."

Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be a pair of Southland matches this weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. On Saturday, the Islanders face Texas State in a 12 p.m. match, while UT Arlington visits for another 12 p.m. match on Sunday afternoon.
