Women’s Tennis Continues Best Start in Program History With 7-0 Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon, taking a 7-0 final over Prairie View A&M to continue its six-match winning streak. The Islanders have not lost since the opening match against nationally ranked Rice.

The Islanders improved to 6-1 on the year with the win, while the Panthers fell to 2-6 after the defeat.

"I'm very proud of our girls, they have been very focused every match this year," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "They have great leadership and great character. They're doing a very good job of starting with a lot of energy and playing every point with intensity.

"Those are the keys to a successful season, the start is so critical and the girls are getting off to very good starts. I attribute their success to how hard they're working in practice and the great leadership they have on the team."

In doubles, Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan allowed just one point to PVAM, taking an 8-1 final at the No. 3 position. Mirna Cicak and Doris Kuselj took an 8-3 final at No. 1 doubles, as did Mia Matuszak and Stefania Nicolae at No. 2, winning 8-3 for the doubles sweep.

In singles, Horan was the first to finish, taking a 6-0, 6-1 match at No. 5 for the 2-0 lead in favor of the Islanders. Cicak and Matuszak each picked up 6-1, 6-1 victories, with Cicak at No. 1 and Matuszak at No. 6 to clinch the match for the Islanders.

Kuselj finished off her opponent at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 final, while Burges scored a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position. Nicolae finished the match with a 6-3, 6-3 final at No. 3 to complete the sweep.

"Every one of these girls has improved so much since last year," said Moore. "That's what I'm really the proudest of."

Next up for the Islanders will be a Southland Conference match against the Northwestern State Lady Demons. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is currently 1-0 in league play, with a big test coming up on March 3rd against NSU.
