Women’s Tennis Comes From Behind for Fifth Win of the Year

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team picked up its fifth win of the year on Thursday, winning 4-1 over Louisiana – Lafayette at Cajuns Courts on the ULL campus.

The Islanders are now 5-1 on the season, marking the best start in school history, besting the previous mark of 4-2 during the 2003 campaign. ULL, a team that was in the ITA national rankings a lot last year, is now 1-5 on the year after the setback.

The two teams agreed to play singles first due to the threat of rain, with the match being stopped once either team clinched their fourth point.

Things started out tough for the Islanders, with Stefania Nicolae suffering a 6-3, 6-3 loss at the No. 3 position, but Chelsea Horan answered back with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 5 to even the score at 1-1.

From that point on, things tensed up considerably, with the final four matches all going to a third set.

Mirna Cicak put her team ahead for good at No. 1 singles with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 final to make it 2-1. Doris Kuselj then added to the advantage with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 final at No. 2 singles. Mia Matuszak finished off the match at No. 6 singles, completing a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 match to give Texas A&M – Corpus Christi a 4-1 win.

Sandra Burges also showed heart, taking a 4-1 lead in third set when the match was clinched.

"The girls played with incredible heart and spirit today; Mirna and Mia and Doris all battled back to win in three sets," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "That shows a lot of heart and a lot of grit when three girls battle back to win in third sets."

"It shows a lot of character and a lot of grit to come back and win all three of the third sets. It also says a lot about these girls commitment to fitness and mental toughness."

Next up for the Islanders will be a doubleheader with the men's team on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Both the men's and women's teams will play the Prairie View A&M Panthers in a match starting at 2 p.m. on the Islanders home court.
