The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team will be in action for the first time this season when they travel to take on Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. The Islanders open the year on the road before returning home for a Saturday afternoon match against No. 70 Rice in the first-ever regular-season match at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders return six lettermen and a redshirt from last season, while adding two new players to the fold, one transfer and one freshman. Leading the way will be senior Mirna Cicak at the No. 1 position. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi also returns No. 2 Doris Kuselj, No. 4 Stefania Nicolae, No. 5 Sandra Burges and No. 6 Mia Matuszak from a year ago. In addition to Ashley Garza, who redshirted a season ago, the Islanders will add Cassie Shaw, a transfer from Nebraska – Kearney and Chelsea Horan, a freshman out of San Antonio.
The team finished 12-6 last year, but will return five-of-six players from the lineup and will look to compete for the top spot in the Southland Conference this year. The addition of Shaw and Horan will help strengthen the Islanders into one of the top teams in the league after improving each of the last four years, including a Top 4 finish a season ago.
The Prairie View A&M Panthers already have one match under their belt, competing hard against No. 6 Baylor before falling by a 5-2 final in Waco. The Panthers earned one of their points by taking the doubles point from the No. 6 Bears on their home court.
The teams will play at 2 p.m. on Thursday, with the Islanders returning following the tilt to prepare for their first match at the brand-new Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. They will play host to the nationally ranked Rice Owls on Saturday at 2 p.m. to christen the new facility.
