Top Performance #7 - Mirna Cicak knocks off No. 1 player from defending Southland Champion Northwestern State
Mirna Cicak had another big year for the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team. The No. 1 singles player for the Islanders led her team to its first winning record in Southland Conference matches while also leading the way to a third-place finish in the league, the highest in program history.
The individual highlight of the year for Cicak would come against the defending Southland Conference Champion Northwestern State Lady Demons.
After the Islanders lost the doubles point, the team had work to do to get back into the match. Down 3-1, Cicak helped her team pull within a point of NSU.
She took down Olga Bazhanova, the No. 1 singles player for the Lady Demons the past two seasons. After winning the first set 6-1 over Bazhanova, Cicak was down 5-0 in the second set and it looked like a third set would be necessary.
The junior captain would not give in and rallied to win seven-straight games for a 7-5 win over Bazhanova.
The victory put her team to within a 3-2 margin, but the Islanders were unable to complete the comeback after losing the doubles point and falling by a 4-3 final to the defending champions.
It was just the second loss in a year that saw the team finish 12-6 overall and 7-4 in league play while advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament for the third-straight season. The Islanders had never qualified for the tournament before Cicak's arrival on The Island.
