SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team closed out the 2011 regular season on Tuesday with a pair of 5-0 wins over St. Mary's on the road.
The Islanders improved to 12-5 on the season while the Rattlers fell to 9-16 overall.
"It was a very focused effort after an emotional conference weekend," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We controlled what we could control out there today."
In the opening match, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi sat its top two players with Bianca Discordia going unfinished at the No. 1 spot after winning the first set at 6-4, 3-0 when the match was clinched. At No. 2 singles, Stefania Nicolae took a 6-3, 6-0 final while Sandra Burges shut her opponent out at 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.
Mia Matuszak won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 while the final two matches were decided by identical scores. Nadia Filmalter took the No. 5 flight by a score of 6-2, 6-2 while LeAnne Mascall won No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 final as well.
In the second match of the day, the Islanders started with doubles play and swept all three matches by 8-2 finals. Discordia and Burges played the No. 1 spot, Nicolae and Matuszak won at No. 2 while Filmalter and Mascall took the No. 3 doubles point.
In singles, Nicolae took a 6-0, 6-4 final at the No. 2 position while Burges won her No. 3 flight by a 6-3, 6-0 final. Matuszak took a 6-1, 6-0 final at No. 4 and Mascall finished out singles play with her 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position.
Filmalter and Discordia both had matches go unfinished when the match was clinched.
With the regular season completed, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will turn its attention to the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament on April 29-May 1 in San Antonio at the UTSA campus.
"We have one singular goal now and that is to win a conference championship," said Moore. "We will be very focused on that one goal from now until the Southland Conference Tournament."
