Women's tennis looks to continue historic start against defending Southland champions

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team will try to continue the best start in school history on Saturday when they host the Northwestern State Lady Demons. The match is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start at the Corpus Christi Country Club.

The Islanders have started 5-1 on the season and are 3-0 in Southland Conference matches for the first time in school history. After dropping their season opener against No. 48 Rice, the team has won five-straight matches. The Lady Demons are 6-2 on the year and 1-1 in league play. They were undefeated in conference play last season for the regular-season championship and also won the Southland Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Mirna Cicak will lead her team against NSU with a 3-1 record on the year at No. 1 singles. Doris Kuselj is 3-1 at the No. 2 position while Bianca Discordia is 3-0 at the No. 3 singles spot. Sandra Burges is 5-1 on the season, 2-1 at No. 4 and 3-0 at No. 5, and Stefania Nicolae is 4-1, going 1-1 at No. 3, 2-0 at No. 4 and 1-0 at No. 5 singles. Mia Matuszak rounds out the singles players with a 4-0 record at No. 6 singles.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi won a 6-1 final against Southeastern Louisiana their last time out on March 8 in Houston.

Andrea Nedorostova and Martina Rubesova are tops on the Lady Demons team with 7-1 singles records while Olga Bazhanova is 5-2 at No. 1 singles.

Match time is 12:30 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Country Club and admission is free to the public.
