Women's Tennis continues unbeaten start in Southland play

HOUSTON, Texas - In a match that had to be moved indoors due to rain, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team beat Southeastern Louisiana 6-1 to move to 3-0 in Southland Conference play, the best start in school history.

"This was a very focused effort from our girls today, they played extremely tough and smart indoors," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "You have to make quick adjustments when a match gets moved from outdoors to indoors and I thought these girls played very savvy, tough tennis.

The win moves the Islanders to 5-1 on the year overall and 3-0 in Southland Conference matches and are now on a five-match winning streak. SELA is 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play.

The success has come while the team continually learns to play at the collegiate level. The Islanders are an extremely young team, with two freshmen and two sophomores in their top six singles players. The inexperience did not hamper their efforts on Tuesday as they continued their strong start.

"This was a very determined group today," said Moore. "This group has worked extremely hard and is improving so much each week"

In doubles, Doris Kuselj and Bianca Discordia won an 8-3 final at the No. 2 spot to give their team an advantage. Following an 8-4 defeat at No. 3 doubles by LeAnne Mascall and Nadia Filmalter, Mirna Cicak and Sandra Burges won an 8-5 match at the No. 1 position to clinch the point for the Islanders.

In singles play, Burges won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 position, while Stefania Nicolae and Mia Matuszak won by identical 6-2, 6-1 finals at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively. Discordia took a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 while Kuselj won 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 2 position. The only singles loss of the day came at No. 1 as Cicak fell 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) to complete the scoring.

"Right now, these girls are competing very tough and have excellent team chemistry," said Moore. "They are doing an excellent job at the things they can control."

Next up for the Islanders will be defending Southland Conference Champion Northwestern State this Saturday at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
