Cicak, Nicolae advance to doubles round of 16 at ITA Texas Regional

WACO - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team finished up play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations Texas Regional on Saturday with its top doubles team in the round of 16 at the prestigious tournament. There are 12 regions in NCAA College Tennis. The tournament is made up of players from the Texas Region. The NCAA is made up of 12 regions, with each sending their champions to play at the ITA Indoor Nationals. Islanders Director of Tennis Steve Moore is the Texas Region Chairman.

"We had some very close matches against some quality players that didn't go our way the day before," said Moore. "The key is to bring it the next day with as much intensity as possible.

"That is what they did today."

Mirna Cicak and Stefania Nicolae won twice on the day to advance in the doubles bracket. In their first match, the Islanders duo beat Zalina Nazarova and Reetta Raty of UTEP by an 8-2 final. In the second round, the pair won another 8-2 match, this time against Rebekka Hanle and Dominique Harmath of Rice. They will face off against Christi Liles and Nazari Urbina of Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

In other action, Sandra Bruges and Leanne Mascall won 8-5 over Ximena Fuentes and Gabriela Vazquez of UTEP before falling 8-0 to Marta Lesniak and Heather Steinbauer from SMU. Bianca Discordia and Mia Matuszak won a 9-7 match over Natalia Mayagoitia and Alicia Porte of Lamar in the first round, but lost 8-4 to Karolina Filipiak and Cristina Danaila of Baylor in round two.

In singles action, Mascall advanced to the fourth round of the consolation bracket after her opponent withdrew due to injury. Bruges won her opening match in the bracket with a 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 win over Aya Bara and will face Carolina Deluca on Sunday morning.

Cicak will play Kayla Stevenson and Matuszak will face Daiana Negreanu on Sunday morning as well.

"I thought we came out and played doubles with a lot of intensity and a lot of purpose," said Moore. "I felt like Sandra played an excellent match."
