WACO - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team completed its first day of play at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Central Regional Championships on Friday.
The Islanders will continue play on Saturday in both singles and doubles action. Day one featured just singles matches for the Islanders.
Nicolae Stefania lost a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 match to Imke Jagau of Sam Houston State. Mia Matuszak lost 6-4, 6-2 against Melissa Hadad of Texas State. Bianca Discordia lost a 6-0, 6-2 tilt against Barbora Vykydalova of North Texas. Sandra Bruges fell 6-3, 6-2 against Daniella Trigo of Rice, Leanne Mascall lost a 6-1, 6-2 match to Giada Dortona from UT Arlington and Mirna Cicak lost a tough 7-5, 6-2 match against Monika Hadvigerova, also from UT Arlington.
Discordia will start the Saturday singles action off in the consolation bracket against Katariina Tuohimaa at 1:30 p.m. while the rest of the Islanders play later in the afternoon.
Matuszak will face Daiana Negreanu while Bruges will be up against Carolina Deluca. Mascall will play Paola Montuenga and Cicak will face Kayla Stevenson, with all of the matches beginning at 4:00 p.m.
In doubles action, Bruges and Mascall will face Ximena Fuentes and Gabriela Vasquez of UTEP on Saturday. Discordia and Matuszak will play against Natalia Mayagoitia and Alicia Porte of Lamar. Cicak and Nicolae go against Zalina Nazarova and Reeta Raty of Texas - Pan American. All doubles matches for the Islanders begin at 9:00 a.m.
