LAFAYETTE, La. - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team finished up their weekend on Sunday at the Louisiana-Lafayette Women's Fall Invite.
Sandra Burges had the strongest showing at the tournament, making it to the quarterfinals of Flight A before bowing out of the tournament. In the opening round, she won 6-3, 6-1 over Amanda Lidster and advanced through the second round with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hannah Appleyard. Burges lost a tough 6-3, 6-3 match against Ilona Serchenko to finish her weekend with a pair of wins.
In other Flight A singles matches, Mirna Cicak lost a 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-4 heartbreaker against Ralista Pirdopska, Mia Matuszak lost 6-2, 6-2 against Asa Bengston, Nadia Filmalter fell 6-1, 6-4 against Rocio Frausto and Stefania Nicolae lost a tough 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-4 match to Alina Volman.
Later in the tournament, Nicolae beat Tea Tvrtkovic 6-3, 6-0 to face Mirna Cicak after Cicak downed Matuszak 6-1, 6-3. In the North quarterfinals, Cicak beat Nicolae 6-2, 6-2 before eventually falling to Melissa Hadad by a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Bianca Discordia won 6-0, 6-3 over Marianna Charlambous and 1-6, 6-0, 10-8 against Alex Bradley in the North semifinals before falling to Hadad by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 score in the bracket finals.
LeAnne Mascall made it to the semifinal round of the Southwest bracket before losing to Moorea Williams by a 6-3, 6-4 final.
In doubles action, Burges and Discordia lost a close 9-7 match to Alex Bradley and Kellie Gutterman from Southern Miss. Two more Islanders teams dropped matches to Southland schools as Cicak and Nicolae lost a nail biter by a 9-7 final against Hadad and Jessica Kahts from Texas State while Mascall and Matuszak lost 8-6 to Ralista Pirdopska and Ilona Serchenko of McNeese State.
The Islanders women's team will be back in action on Oct. 22-26 at the ITA Regionals. The tournament will be held in Waco on the campus of Baylor.
